A Brief History of Shuffle Bowlers For Your Reading Enjoyment Shuffle Bowlers were invented by United in October 1949 with the introduction of United's 'Shuffle Alley' in October of 1949. United continued to make Shuffle alleys all the way into the 1990s. There were three makers of Shuffle Bowlers, United, Chicago Coin, and Bally. United Shuffle Bowlers are thought to be the highest quality, best looking, and easiest to repair of the three major manufacturers A Shuffle Bowler alley is anywhere from 4 to 8 foot long with bowling pins at the end.
The player knocks down the bowling pins with a metal cased hockey puck slid along the alley. For this reason some people call them Puck Bowlers. The puck is slid down the alley and hits switches on the alley, which cause a relay to pull in, allowing the bowling pins to retract upward. The puck was returned to the player by bouncing off the back rubber wall and sliding back up the alley to the player. Alley wax, which is made by Sun Glo was used to help the shuffle puck slide up and down the alley. Alley wax is not really a wax and looks like a layer of corn meal.
